Custom Acrylic Keychains: Complete File Setup Guide for Beginners

01 Jul 2026

If you are ordering custom acrylic keychains for the first time, figuring out the right file setup can feel overwhelming. This guide covers everything you need — bleed, resolution, color mode, hole placement, double-sided printing, and special finishes — so your proof comes back correct on the first try.

Quick Answer

Here is the checklist if you are in a hurry:

Setting

Requirement

Color Mode

CMYK

Resolution

Minimum 300 DPI and 1000 px

Recommended Formats

TIFF, PDF, PSD (formats that support CMYK).

Hole Position

Default: 2.5mm hole at top center. Custom positions available — just tell us.

Minimum Line Width

3 px (measured at final order size)

Before You Start: File Basics

Recommended File Formats

We accept AI, PSD, PNG, PDF, and TIFF. However, we strongly recommend TIFF, PDF, or PSD — because these formats can store color data in CMYK mode.

Important: PNG files cannot save CMYK color information. If you design in PNG, the colors will be in RGB, which may shift when converted to CMYK for printing.

Color Mode: Why CMYK Matters

All of our acrylic products are printed using the CMYK color mode. CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black). It is a subtractive color model used in professional printing. If you design in RGB (the color mode used for screens), the printed result will usually look darker and less vibrant than what you see on your monitor.

Pro tip: Design directly in CMYK from the start. If you have already designed in RGB, convert it in Photoshop (Image > Mode > CMYK Color) and adjust the colors afterward using Hue/Saturation or Curves.

Resolution Requirements

Your artwork must be at least 300 DPI and 1000 px at the final order size. Low-resolution images will look blurry or pixelated when printed.

What happens if your file is too small? We will contact you to ask if you have a higher-resolution version. If not, we will let you know the final product may look blurry, and you can decide whether to proceed.

Step-by-Step File Setup

Step 1: Set Your Document Size to the Final Order Size

Create your canvas at the exact size you want the finished keychain to be. For example, if you are ordering a 2-inch keychain, set your document to 2 inches (50.8mm).

Step 2: Add Bleed (If You Want No Transparent Border)

By default, we add a 2.5mm transparent border around your design. This means your artwork will be printed exactly as-is, with a clear acrylic edge visible around it.

If you want your design to extend all the way to the edge with no transparent border, you must add 2mm of bleed to your artwork. The bleed area is the extra image that will be cut off. This prevents white edges from showing if the cutting machine is slightly off.

Step 3: Export Your File Correctly

Before exporting, run through this checklist:

· Document size = final order size (1:1 scale)

· Color mode = CMYK

· Resolution = 300 DPI or higher

· Transparent background (if you want shaped/keyline cut)

· All text and logos inside the safe zone

Hole Placement: What You Need to Know

There is no strict standard for hole placement because every design is different. Here is how we handle it by default:

· Default position: Top center, with a 3mm diameter hole.

· If your artwork is tilted or off-center, we will straighten it and place the hole at the visual top center.

· Custom hole position: Yes, you can specify exactly where you want the hole. Just leave a note in your order or mark it clearly in your design file.

Double-Sided Printing: How to Prepare Your Files

We offer both single-sided and double-sided printing. Double-sided printing is popular when you want artwork on both the front and back of the keychain.

Same Design on Both Sides

Only one file is needed. We will print the same artwork on both sides.

Different Designs on Front and Back

You can submit two separate files, or one file split into top/bottom or left/right — as long as we can clearly tell which side is the front and which is the back.

File naming tip: Label your files clearly, such as "Design_Front" and "Design_Back," or "Design_A" and "Design_B." Any clear label works — Front/Back, A/B, F/B — as long as we can understand it.

Critical: Alignment and Readable Back Text

Alignment matters. The front and back designs must align perfectly. If they are even slightly off, the white ink layer may show through at the edges.

If your design includes text and you want the back text to be readable (not mirrored), you must upload two separate files: one with the front text normally oriented, and one with the back text also normally oriented (not flipped). And both of them must align perfectly as well.

Special Finishes: Epoxy, Glitter, Holographic & Rainbow

We offer several special finishes to make your keychains stand out. The good news: you do not need to do anything special in your design file for most of these. Simply select the option when placing your order.

Glitter Epoxy: A sparkly, textured coating on the surface. Available in single-sided or double-sided.

Holographic (Holo): A rainbow shimmer effect under light. Available in various patterns like stars or broken glass.

Rainbow Acrylic: The acrylic material itself has a rainbow/iridescent effect. Cannot go with other holographic effect.

Mirror Acrylic: A reflective, mirror-like surface coating. Cannot go with other holographic effect.

Luminous/Glow-in-the-Dark: Absorbs light and glows in the dark. Cannot go with other holographic effect.

Important exception for single-sided finishes: If you order single-sided epoxy, single-sided glitter, or single-sided holographic, you must clearly mark which side is the front (the side with the finish) and which is the back (plain). Use the same labeling method as double-sided printing: Front/Back, A/B, or F/B.

Design Limits: What We Cannot Print

To avoid disappointment, keep these technical limits in mind when designing:

Minimum line width: 3 px when measured at your final order size. Anything thinner may not print clearly or may break during printing.

Semi-transparent colors: We can print semi-transparent colors, but semi-transparent white is not possible. White ink is used as a solid base layer and cannot be made see-through.

Gradients: Gradients print fine. No special setup needed.

Very small text: Extremely tiny text (under 5pt at final size) may become unreadable after printing and cutting. When in doubt, make it larger.

FAQ

Q: Do you provide design templates?

A: No, we do not offer fixed templates because every keychain is fully customizable in size and shape. You can design freely at your desired dimensions.

Q: What if my file is in RGB?

A: We recommend converting it to CMYK before sending. If you send an RGB file, we will convert it for you, but the colors may shift. To minimize surprises, we suggest convert it yourself and adjust.

Q: Can I use a photo for my keychain?

A: Yes, as long as the photo is high resolution (300+ DPI at final size). If the photo is low quality, we will warn you before production.

Q: Do I need to add the hole in my design file?

A: No. We handle the hole placement during production. If you have a specific request, just note it in your order or mark it on the design.

Q: Can I mix different finishes in one order?

A: Yes, but each variant needs to be added to your cart separately. For example, if you want 10 glitter keychains and 10 holographic keychains of the same design, add them as two separate items.

Q: What does the proof show?

A: Your proof shows the cut line (die line) and hole placement. It is not a product photo, it is a technical preview to confirm size, shape, position and other order details before we start production.
