Special Requirements for Kiss-Cut Sticker Files

15 Apr 2026

We often receive design files for kiss-cut stickers where the character artwork and background are merged into a single layer. We require customers to separate the main character and background into two individual layers, or provide them as two separate files.

Many customers wonder why we cannot simply cut out the main elements, create cut lines, and proceed with production directly from the merged file. Here is a detailed explanation:

If your file is not divided into two clear layers--the sticker artwork layer and the background layer, we cannot accurately identify which areas need to be cut as individual stickers. This is especially challenging for designs with complex background. In addition, some customers have custom shape requirements for each single sticker piece. For this reason, we highly recommend separating the sticker elements onto independent layers. This allows our team to define the kiss-cut lines accurately according to your needs.

Most of the time, repeated back-and-forth communication cannot resolve these ambiguities immediately. It may also lead to misunderstandings and cause unnecessary delays. Furthermore, having our design team manually cut out artwork and process every merged kiss-cut file would consume a huge amount of working time.

Submitting fully layered files with separated foreground elements and backgrounds helps save time and greatly improves the efficiency of proof creation and overall production.

So when ordering your kiss-cut stickers, don’t forget to send your character art and background as separate layers!
Super important for smooth cutting and cute perfect results!
